TRANSPORT

The Mill is in a rural location which requires transport systems to get to and from.

We are fortunate in having a reasonably fast and robust wireless internet service from Cromarty Firth Wireless Networks.

Actual transport requirements can be altered due to requirements on the day. Normal day to day transport is by car. Pleasure use is extended to motorcycles or a Cube ebike. Bus sevices extend from Cromarty to Inverness and the nearest stop can be reached at Newhall Junction. Other services go to Dingwall. Muir of Ord or Conon Bridge are the nearest rail stations. The only vehicle / passenger ferry on the Black Isle is the Cromarty - Nigg seasonal service which is limited in number of vehicles, two, it can carry and operated from June to September most days, dependant on tide and weather.

The nearest commercial airfield is Dalcross [EGPE] and the closest airstrip is Newhall Mains, a private grass strip. Culbokie airstrip, some 7 miles distant serves microlights and similar light aircraft.

CARS

  • Had our first play in an electric vehicle with this demo from Dicksons of Inverness. Picture near Brockies Lodge, Kiltarlity, The Aird.
  • Prior to PDI and being plated up. End of March 2023. Took almost 5 months for delivery from SAIC. Car was then taken to have ceramic coating applied at Highland Polishing - now unfortunately defunct.
  • Shiny new ev at the mill. Still awaiting OVO to fit smart Ohme Charger at shed to obtain cheaper rate at this time.
  • Loch Ness after commissioning. Circa 1988.
  • About to set off for a trip to Isle of Lewis.
  • Looking south towards the Harris hills.
  • Triking at Luskintyre Beach, Harris.

An electric car (MG4) has now been added to the stable. It is convenient, economical, fast and comfortable.

Pros are cheaper running costs overall. No smell or carbon footprint.

Cons are slightly more planning is required over distances > 100 miles. Initial cost of car and home infrastructure required.

The Triking is due to be re-commissioned in 2025, after many years as boxes of bits.
